Toyota Motor Corporation has announced a cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Municipal People's Government to support China's green, low-carbon development. As part of this agreement, Toyota will establish a LEXUS battery electric vehicle (BEV) and battery R&D and manufacturing company in Jinshan District, Shanghai.

The Chinese government aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Aligning with these goals, Toyota has introduced its Environmental Challenge 2050 strategy, which focuses on reducing CO₂ emissions. This new initiative is part of Toyota's ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
Toyota will collaborate with partners such as FAW Group and GAC Group to extend their initiatives from Shanghai to the broader Yangtze River Delta. Their efforts will include developing logistics networks, forming partnerships within the industrial chain, and applying advanced technologies in hydrogen energy, autonomous driving, and battery recycling. Together, they aim to create a globally influential carbon-neutral project.
In response to the growing demand for new energy vehicles in China, Toyota plans to establish a wholly-owned BEV and battery company in Shanghai. This new entity will leverage the region's advanced industrial chain, robust logistics network, skilled talent pool, and expansive market to develop pure electric models under the LEXUS brand. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027.
Toyota also emphasized that the new plant will incorporate innovative production technologies to create an environmentally sustainable production environment.
