XPeng Motors announced its third production model, the XPeng P5, the world's first production smart EV equipped with automotive-grade LiDAR technology. The P5 will bring Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) capabilities to city roads for the first time in a production vehicle, powered by XPeng's full-stack in-house developed autonomous driving system XPILOT 3.5.
Positioned as a family-friendly model to popularize EVs, the P5 boasts cutting edge technology and compelling value in its class with superior user-centric and intuitive in-car features. With XPeng's proprietary XPILOT 3.5 system powering smart driving, and latest Xmart OS 3.0 delivering smart interaction, the P5 presents a game-changing new vision for smart EVs.
"The P5 brings a new level in sophistication and technological advancement for smart EVs," said He Xiaopeng, Chairman & CEO of XPeng. "Each new XPeng model aims for a new high in technology, and the P5 is our most advanced and technically ambitious model yet. Our homegrown technology, distinctive design language and user experience philosophy all reflect XPeng's drive to grow from its Chinese roots to realize its global vision of leading the world's Smart EV market."
XPENG say that its new XPILOT 3.5 architecture is the strongest autonomous driving system in production cars. The new architecture comprises 32 perception sensors (including 2 LiDAR units, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 millimetre-wave radars, and 13 high-resolution cameras) and 1 high-precision positioning unit (GNSS + IMU). The sensors are integrated into 360° dual-perception fusion to provide sufficient redundancy across the perception sensors to handle challenging and complex road conditions.
The manufacturer says that the P5's double-prism LiDAR units can distinguish pedestrians, cyclists and scooters, static obstacles, and road works in challenging scenarios such as night and low-light conditions, backlighting, and alternating light and dark illumination in tunnels.
Extending the Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) function from highways to city diving, the P5 will be able to handle situations such as cutting-in, automatically follow and speed limit optimization on urban roads, recognizing traffic lights as well as small objects.
The P5's Xmart OS 3.0 – XPeng's latest in-car operation system and a standard P5 spec - create an advanced digital cockpit to deliver next-generation user-vehicle interaction. The powerful Xmart OS 3.0 platform supports full-scenario all-voice interaction, answering complex driver-vehicle and passenger-vehicle interaction with a straightforward solution: Voice for Everything.
The P5 is the first vehicle in its class to deploy Qualcomm's Snapdragon flagship SA8155P auto-grade computing platform, three times more potent than the previous generation. It ensures seamless user control and interaction to assist, inform, and entertain driver and passengers.
The instrument console includes a 15.6-inch large-size screen with all essential information and controls right where the driver needs them for full driver utility and control. Xmart OS 3.0 also allows vehicle-to-home connection for maximum convenience.
The P5's smart interaction suite also includes a remote Bluetooth key with robust security specifications. A fully-stocked ecosystem of in-house and third-party applications and software packages allow for rich user-created content and many useful options.
